after many happy years on MindManager, I have started to test XMind a few weeks ago because
- I am in the process of switching all my software to run directly from memory stick
- I prefer open source where possible
- from what I have seen so far, I think XMind has far superior functionality
There is so far only one single but crippling problem that I have found which, at this point, ultimately prevents me from switching to XMind: Its absolutely insatiable hunger for memory.
No matter what machine I run it on - a slightly weakish XP Pro SP2 computer, or a powerful new Vista machine - and no matter whether I run it from memory stick or from the hard drive, the problem is always the same:
I open XMind. Even with not a single mind map opened, that starts out at 84000k memory used already. From there, every single action, whatever I do, increases memory use. Example: I create a new mind map document. Memory increases a little. I create some branches with maybe a few dozen sub topics total. Memory increases again, say to 95000k. I delete all those branches again. Memory increases AGAIN. And on and on. Whatever I do, every single click or key stroke, increases the memory XMind uses, until sooner or later it becomes completely sluggish and slow and the whole computer jams up and becomes unuseable. Note that I am NOT talking about using large mind maps whatsoever!
For comparison: MindManager on the same machines starts with about half the memory use, 45000k, and even with very large mind maps does not get much higher than maybe 90000k, and certainly doesn't keep increasing memory use with every single action I take. That confirms my view that the memory usage of XMind is ridiculously high.
Switching off animation, shadow and gradient colour did not change this problem one bit, by the way.
Is that only happening to me??? I can not believe that. Or are other users of XMind just accepting this behaviour? I do not find that acceptable. Google has not turned up much info except that XMind seems to have had a memory leak problem in the past, which judging from what I read seemingly - supposedly - has been solved. Is this or a different memory leak problem back again with this most recent version 3.2.1?
I'm really torn and frustrated. I love XMind for many reasons and very much hope that there is a real solution to this. But if I can't use XMind with both small and large mind maps while still having a reasonably low memory use, I will have to stick with MindManager.
Any help much appreciated - if anyone can fix this for me, please let me know!
PS: If this is not a bug but something that I am overlooking and that I can fix, please let me know; and also of course feel free to move this post to another section of the forums in that case.
I see similar behavior. Looks like a memory leak is part of the problem. Sometimes it grabs another 20K when I'm not even touching the computer. Double-clicking a node to edit the text sometimes pushes its memory demand up by several Mb.
This ought to be fixed, but I haven't found it preventing me from using Xmind, and I have only 2GB Ram. This is with XP SP3.
